Catalonia
Situated in north east Spain, Catalonia is undoubtedly Spain's most spectacular and varied province. It is bordered by the mighty Pyrenees to the north, the Mediterranean to the east and the Ebro delta to the south. The local language Catalan, suppressed during the Franco era, is now widely spoken and celebrated throughout the area.

Map of Catalonia

Catalonia is a land of legend, history and culture and has Spain's second city Barcelona as its capital. The regions to the north of Gerona, Emporda, Pla d' Estany and Garrotxa are in our opinion the most beautiful and richest areas in all of Spain. The Baix Emporda in springtime is a joy, with stunning wild flowers, poppy fields and blossom. The north Catalonia coast between Palamos and Bagur is arguably the most beautiful in Europe with spectacular cliffs, hidden coves and glorious beaches. It is here that you will find the pretty fishing villages of Callella de Palafrugell, Llfranc and Tamariu.

In recent years there has been a spectacular rise in UK visitors to Catalonia. Barcelona is now regularly listed in the top five European city destinations thanks to the budget airlines such as Easyjet and Ryanair. There are now up to 20 flights a day from the UK and in 2002 Ryanair started its service to Gerona. All Parkliving Spain parks in the Emporda, Garrotxa and Pla d' Estany areas are less than 30 minutes from Gerona airport.

For those who don't wish to fly, the new super train line in 2008 will make it possible to travel to Catalonia in a day from the UK. Travelling by car is a practical and convenient way to spend a holiday or extended stay in northern Catalonia as it is only 850 miles from Calais, connected by an excellent motorway system.
Climate - What to Expect
Our three parks are in beautiful north Catalonia between the Pyrenees and Gerona. Summers in the region are hot with many days reaching 30 degrees C or more. The short winter is our favourite time of year and you can expect an average day time temperature of 13 - 15 degrees in the months between December and February. It is not unusual to wake up to a light frost in midwinter, however by mid morning you will be sitting outside in warm sunshine. This is a wonderful time of year to walk, cycle or explore. Spring comes early to the region, with strong sunshine as early as March. Summer lingers well into October and it is not unusual to experience days of 20 degrees C or more in November.

Rainfall can occur anytime of the year, with infrequent heavy thunderstorms in summer, and short down-pours followed by sun at other times of the year. However, it's not unusual to get an occasional day of extended rain - the result is a gloriously green and beautiful landscape where plants grow throughout the year.
